The night before Jezhn…

Tomorrow is Jezhn (Eid).

Today, women will finally go and clean their long, bushy eyebrows, its been left untidy for so long, just to look perfect on Jezhn

Today some families will gather on the floor, on a big sufra as they kneed, stuff and knock out kulicha dough and then neatly place one next to the other ready for the oven… agar karaba habet.

Today, there will be children who will sleep with their new clothes neatly folded waiting to be worn first thing in the morning.

Today a grandfather will be excited for tomorrow, as the grandchildren will all gather in his little, old house. He guesses in his mind whether this will be his last Jezhn with them

Today a mother will go to sleep with sore feet, and an aching back for she has cleaned the entire house for tomorrow’s guests

Today, a father will put together all the little money he can to buy tomorrow morning’s special meal

Today, a child in the orphanage is joyful for a relative will visit her tomorrow

Today, a family are thanking God for the amount of charity they’ve received

Today, someone will travel somewhere to surprise his love tomorrow morning

Today for some means more work than a normal day without the extra pay

Today a family are happy because dad came home early

Today, sheep and cows will be at the back of pickups and at new homes with sunset, little do they know of what is waiting for them at sunrise

Today, there are people in my city who dread tomorrow

Tomorrow, some will wake up and make their way to their parents’ house in a rainbow of jli kurdi, jewelry and lots of lipstick

Tomorrow children will be given sloppy kisses, big hugs and a little bit of Jezhnana they will then visit the dukan

Tomorrow some will wake up eyes full of tears, wear their darkest clothes, make their way to a grave somewhere near or far. To read Alfatiha.

Tomorrow, a family will take a family photo and it will hang on the wall for the next generation

Tomorrow, some will scroll through Facebook wishing their Jezhn was a little happier

Tomorrow, maybe for the first time in a very long time, a family will have meat on their brnj or in their shla

Tomorrow an elderly woman, at the elderly peoples’ home, will be awaiting the visit of her son. For he promised to come and see her the first day of Jezhn

Tomorrow there will be children who will wake up to silent, secret cries as for the first time this Jezhn their father is not with them. Between the two Jezhns he was martyred

Tomorrow young girls will laugh and share stories as they wash more pots and pans than they have done in all their lives

Tomorrow, one young man, will have an excuse to visit the family of the girl in his dreams

Tomorrow, foes will become friends again, and apologies will be accepted among enemies

Tomorrow, someone will have to smile and act happy his entire day as he greets family and friends; hiding his miseries over the failed business and endless debt

Tomorrow, the freedom fighters of my beloved nation will be in uniform, far from their family, making sure the rest of I can celebrate in peace

Tomorrow a beautiful a young woman will smile as he texts her hamw rozhekt jezhn bet

Tomorrow, someone will be driving the streets during breakfast time looking for a bakery only to realize its Jezhn and every bakery in town is closed

Tomorrow my Yazidi and Christian friends will greet fellow Muslims on their Jezhn, because this is what they do in Kurdistan

And for some, my dearest friend, tomorrow will be no different to today, the day before and the day after
